Pura Vida Wedding
The Soundtrack
We chose songs for our playlist to highlight certain aspects of our lives, relationship, or the wedding itself. Then, a couple of them we chose just to break things up or surprise you. :)
Pre-Nump - Outkast
Jokes! Why not? Let's start on a light note.
25 Minutes to Go - Johnny Cash
Terry’s processional. He walked on to the beach with this song. It is about a man preparing to die in a few minutes by a noose in prison. At least Terry wasn't wearing the Game Over t-shirt...
Svara Mantra - Ravi Shankar
For Kia’s processional we wanted a live sitar player, but there are none in the Punta Uva area. Instead, we chose the Balanescu Quartet's interpretation of the Kraftwerk song Autobahn. This is a nod to our first date - a Kraftwerk concert. Imagine Terry's surprise when the wedding planner emailed him less than 2 weeks before the wedding that a Sitar player was in town! Now imagine Kia's surprise when that sitar player (and a drummer) were sitting on the beach as she walked to meet her groom. In lieu of an actual recording of the performers, we chose this song to represent the serendipitous performance.
Sunday Kind of Love - Etta James
We were married on a Sunday. Etta James’ soothing, soulful voice was welcomed that day.
Solarium - Boards of Canada
Just to mix it up a little, and a great way to include some electronic music without boring the audience too much. ;)
Baby (1971) - OsMutantes
Our first dance. We saw OsMutantes perform the month of our engagement after being fans for quite a while. Why this song? The beautiful simplicity… “you must try the new ice cream flavor.”
Landslide - Stevie Nicks
Mother/son dance, chosen because it's a beautiful song that deals with growing up, maturity, and independence while still respecting where you come from.
Here Comes the Sun - Nina Simone
Father/Daughter dance. This is a great song about transitions. Kia, her father, and their family have been through a lot and this is a great song to celebrate a joyous occasion.
Begin the Beguine - Artie Shaw
Awesome classic song we discovered while in our dancing classes. It was written for the 1935 musical "Jubilee" by Cole Porter (of Peru, Indiana!), but it was Artie Shaw that really popularized it. In the last 7 decades it has been remade by everyone from Miles Davis to Pat Boone to Julio Iglesias to Cheryl Crow. Bonus: Artie is a clarinetist!
Her Majesty - The Beatles
Terry treats Kia like a queen. Don’t ever question that. And someday he's going to make her his. ;)
Linus and Lucy - Vince Guaraldi
Who doesn’t love this song? Our guests surprised us with the impromptu Peanuts dance circle. Everyone can at least imitate Snoopy dancing.
Young Folks - Peter, Bjorn, and John
The irony is not lost on us …old geezers playing this. No, not really. It is just a sweet song about accepting people for who they are, and it makes you want to whistle along.
Let’s Never Stop Falling in Love - Pink Martini
There were a few Pink Martini fans at the wedding. Back in the day they used to perform at weddings because their music is too perfect for such joyous events. They don’t do that anymore because they have a big following in Taiwan and France… cult following in the U. S. We had a little trouble choosing just one of their songs for this disc.
Aaj Mausam Bada Beimann Hai (Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me) - Mohammed Rafi
"Monsoon Wedding" is our favorite movie. This song is our favorite from the movie soundtrack. Kia surprised Terry with a poi (fire) dance at the reception, choreographed to this song. Terry was so awestruck by her dance in her wedding gown that he had to fight tears. It was definitely an evening highlight for both of us, and one of those things (like the Sitar player) that almost didn't happen.
Golden Years - David Bowie
Uber cool song that was made even cooler in “A Knight’s Tale” starring Heath Ledger. Just fun, fun, fun to dance to. We expect to be playing this again at our 50th anniversary.
Strawberry Fields Forever - Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
Berto, the surf guy on the day of the wedding, was surprised to hear these guys played at our reception. He didn’t know folks in the states listened to them. Folks usually don’t but they should! This is an adaptation of the Beatles' hit.
It's Tricy - Run DMC
Kia had no idea this was on the wedding playlist, but Terry snuck it in. Don’t you want to do 80’s dance moves to it? It is on here because it is one of the tamer rap songs that we would put on, and a great classic.
Gay Bar - LSDudes (Electric Six vs. Village People)
We are not big YMCA fans even though that song seems mandatory for weddings along with the chicken dance and a few other clichés. This song is hilarious to us on its own, but when we found it with the YMCA mix it was a must have. It did fool people with the beginning but people were flexible and danced anyway.
Ready 2 Wear - Felix da Housecat
We love fun, electronic music and this is one of the most fabulous tracks we know.
Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Our recessional song. Husband and wife, hand in hand.
Enterlude - The Killers
Whether you were with us for the wedding week, reception day, or in spirit. Thanks for your support.
